According to Elisabeth Rosenthal in the New York Times Feb 1, 2015, many patients travelling to Florida for the winter end up with medical tests that they don’t need.
There is a trend of doctors in the south ordering costly and unnecessary tests for patients from the north who are wintering in the south.
Medical tests are a large industry in North America. Data suggests that some doctors increase their incomes by ordering more tests. For Canadians this can be punitive.
The strategy to defend your self if you are wintering in the south and see a doctor who seems to be ordering a number of expensive tests is to call your family doctor or specialist back in Canada to see if the tests are necessary.
The other option is for the patient to travel with their “green” binder of medical records with copies of the latest tests that were done in Canada.
This can act to eliminate a number of unnecessary tests.
