CROSS BORDER SHOPPING FOR HEALTHCARE SERVICES: Raymond Rupert MD, MBA.

The rumour is that Canadians are purchasing about $700,000,000 of healthcare services in the US.

A small percentage of the $200B spent each year on healthcare services in Canada.

But the number is material and growing.

Furthermore, many Canadians are buying healthcare insurance that delivers the services in the US.

Best Doctors insurance in Canada is an example of US healthcare insurance that Canadians can purchase.

The irony and possible tragedy is that these premium dollars are being spent in US hospitals and not in Canadian hospitals.

The extra capital might help Canadian hospitals to become sustainable, if they were allowed to deliver private services paid by private insurers.
